Titanium offers the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal and is completely biocompatible, making it ideal for aerospace, medical implants, and high-performance racing. It is highly resistant to corrosion, even in seawater and chemical environments. However, it is challenging to machine due to its low thermal conductivity and reactivity, requiring specialized knowledge and tooling. Partwork has extensive experience in machining Grade 2 and Grade 5 titanium for critical applications.
| Property | Specification |
|---|---|
| Strength-to-Weight | Highest of Any Metal – 40% lighter than steel |
| Biocompatibility | Excellent – FDA approved for implants, non-toxic |
| Corrosion Resistance | Exceptional – superior to stainless steel, resists chlorides |
| Thermal Conductivity | Very Low – heat concentrates at cutting edge (requires flood coolant) |
| Machinability | Poor to Fair – difficult to machine, requires slow speeds/feeds |
| Melting Point | High (1668°C) – suitable for high-temp applications |
| Max Part Size | 80 × 50 × 50 cm (varies by raw material availability) |
| Lead Time | 12-18 working days (standard) |
| Typical Price (India) | High (₹3,000-5,000/kg raw material cost) |
We offer a wide selection of grades to meet specific engineering requirements, from general purpose to high-performance flight-grade alloys.
| Grade | Standards | Key Features | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 2 (CP-2) | ASTM B265 | Most popular CP grade. Good strength, excellent corrosion resistance, ductile | Marine, chemical plants, medical implants, heat exchangers |
| Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) | UNS R56400 | Highest strength titanium alloy. Heat treatable. Most popular globally | Aerospace structures, turbine blades, motorsports, fasteners |
| Grade 1 (CP-1) | ASTM B265 | Softest titanium. Best formability, excellent corrosion resistance | Deep drawing, heat exchangers, chemical processing |
| Finish | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
As-Machined Standard finish | — | ₹0 |
Anodizing Type II (Color) Color coding, decorative, anti-galling | +4-6 days | +₹1,500-4,000 |
Electropolishing Mirror finish for medical implants, improved fatigue life | +4-7 days | +₹3,000-8,000 |
Bead Blasting Matte finish, glare reduction | +2-4 days | +₹500-1,500 |
PVD Coating Hard coating, wear resistance (TiN) | +5-8 days | +₹2,500-6,000 |
Everything you need to know about machining Titanium Machining.
Titanium is expensive due to the complex extraction process (Kroll process) and high raw material costs (₹3,000+/kg). Additionally, it is difficult to machine (slow speeds, high tool wear), making the manufacturing cost 8-15x higher than aluminum.
Grade 2 is commercially pure (99% Ti), offering excellent corrosion resistance and ductility but moderate strength (similar to mild steel). Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is an alloy with Aluminium and Vanadium, offering significantly higher strength (weldable, heat treatable), but is harder to form.
Yes, Titanium anodizing creates an oxide layer that generates color through interference colors (Type II) without dyes. It is used for color-coding medical implants and decorative purposes. Type III (hard coat) is rare.
Yes, it has poor thermal conductivity (heat stays in the chip/tool), is chemically reactive at high temps (causes galling), and has a low modulus of elasticity (springy). It requires rigid setups, sharp tools, and flood coolant.
Standard CNC tolerances of ±0.05mm are routine. High precision tolerances of ±0.01mm to ±0.025mm can be achieved with careful process control and advanced machinery.
